Best Golf Courses for a Day Trip - Iowa

Updated: Jan 27, 2023

The state's relatively flat topography would lead most people to believe that Iowa's golf courses would be lacking in variety, but they would be mistaken. There are a lot of golf courses in Iowa that are just waiting to be played. The Hawkeye State's natural landscapes are reflected in Iowa's nearly 400 golf courses that are located between the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.

Work on your swing and enhance every shot with these public golf courses in the Iowa City area.

The Harvester Golf Club

Location: 1102 330th St, Rhodes, IA 50234

Contact No.: (641) 227-4653

As a golf course with a championship 18-hole golf course, the Harvester Golf Club offers high-end amenities to the public. In addition to Lake Harvester, the course also features several small ponds and streams. All golfers can test their skills on five sets of tees, with fairways set in a rolling prairie landscape with little sign of nearby settlements.

Davenport Country Club

Location: 25500 Valley Dr, Pleasant Valley, IA 52767

Contact No.: (563) 332-4050

About a mile from the banks of the Mississippi River, Davenport Country Club is nestled in a beautiful landscape of rolling hills and deep valleys. You'll find steep elevation changes, ponds, towering oak and ash trees, as well as undulating greens that are incredibly challenging. There's a 423 yard par four on the course's signature 16th hole, and it's played from an elevated tee.

Cedar Rapids Country Club

Location: 550 27th St Dr SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403

Contact No.: (319) 363-9673

Featuring a 100-foot elevation change and mature oak trees lining the fairways, Cedar Rapids Country Club is situated in a perfect setting for parkland-style golf. There are bunkers that mark out the path up to a raised first green that gives players a good view of back-to-front-pitched greens from the elevated first tee. Since there are no two holes that resemble each other, it makes for a truly memorable experience.

Des Moines Golf & Country Club (South)

Location: 1600 Jordan Creek Parkway West Des Moines, IA 50266

Contact No.: (515) 440-7500

Des Moines Golf & Country Club (South) hosted the 2017 Solheim Cup and had nine holes from each course. While the entire course is demanding, the first four holes are particularly difficult due to the presence of water. It's possible to par or even birdie every hole, but poor shots will make it difficult to recover.

Wakonda Club

Location: 3915 Fleur Dr, Des Moines, IA 50321

Contact No.: (515) 285-4962

With a layout that is reminiscent of the Golden Age, Wakonda Club is full of distinguishing features and flair. Every par 4/5 has wide open fairways, allowing you to take a big swing at the ball. The golf course presents its own set of challenges with its uneven lies and rolling hills. The annual Principal Charity Classic has been taking place here with the aim to help Iowa children's charities.
